What are call letters and numbers?
If you ask a Librarian you would get a different answer than what a broadcasting company would give you! ( click her for more details on that.) But they all are used to identify the place you are looking for. Kind of like an address for where you live. As Mrs. Brangwin would say, "all books have an address that tell you where they live." By the way, do you know your address?
Call Letters?
Well, I think they consist of letters! In our Fiction section we have the bookcases numbers 1, 2, and 3. On the end of the bookcase you'll see "Fic (fiction) and then three letters, which are the author's first three letters of their last name. And that's how we file fiction books! Have you seen these before? I bet you can even name the author and the section they are found in.
· Fic Abb (Fiction - author is Abbott)
· Fic Pao (Fiction - author is Paolini)
· Fic Par (Fiction - author is Parks)
· Fic Osb (Fiction - author is Osborne)
Call Numbers
Well, I think they consist of ________! Did you say numbers? You are so right! A lot of kids know that dogs can be found in the 636.7 section, cats in the 636.8 section, and hamsters in the 636.9 section, but do you know what can be found in this section? and who the author is? Let me know if you find out!
