This webpage is designed to help you find any book in our library at Cherry Valley Elementary. If you still have questions click on the link below to email me, and if there's something I can add to this site to make it more user friendly, please let me know. We're always looking for volunteers in the library and if by any chance you would like to work in the library, feel free to come in and meet with our librarian, Mrs. Brangwin. Even if you have no experience working in a library, we'll train you, and in no time at all you'll feel confidant checking out books and putting them on the shelves. Thanks for visiting.

Definition: Literary works of imagination- novels and stories that describe imaginary people and events. Untrue statement: something that is untrue and has been made up to deceive people. All fiction books are filed by author's last name.

The shelves are numbered 1 through 4. If you see  "FIC"  it tells you this is a Fiction book, and below that are three letters. Those three letters are the first three letter of the author's last name:

Definition: Factual writing: writings that tell facts ( true things), information, and are not primarily works of the creative mind.
The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC, also called the Dewey Decimal System) is a proprietary system of library classification developed by Melvil Dewey in 1876, and since greatly modified and expanded in the course of the twenty-two major revisions, the most recent in 2004.
The system is made up of ten main classes or categories, each divided into ten secondary classes or subcategories, each having ten subdivisions of its own. For a more detailed list, see List of Dewey Decimal classes.

Here is a small glimpse of some great set books in our library:

Bridge to Terabithia
The Phantom Tollbooth

What are call letters and numbers?
If you ask a Librarian you would get a different answer than what a broadcasting company would give you! ( click her for more details on that.) But they all are used to identify the place you are looking for. Kind of like an address for where you live. As Mrs. Brangwin would say, "all books have an address that tell you where they live." By the way, do you know your address?

Call Letters?
Well, I think they consist of letters! In our Fiction section we have the bookcases numbers 1, 2, and 3. On the end of the bookcase you'll see "Fic (fiction) and then three letters, which are the author's first three letters of their last name. And that's how we file fiction books! Have you seen these before? I bet you can even name the author and the section they are found in.
· Fic Abb (Fiction - author is Abbott)
· Fic Pao (Fiction - author is Paolini)
· Fic Par (Fiction - author is Parks)
· Fic Osb (Fiction - author is Osborne)
Call Numbers
Well, I think they consist of ________! Did you say numbers? You are so right! A lot of kids know that dogs can be found in the 636.7 section, cats in the 636.8 section, and hamsters in the 636.9 section, but do you know what can be found in this section? and who the author is? Let me know if you find out!
· 811 Pre ( Poetry - Prelutsky)
· 612 Sti (circulatory system - Stille)
· 550 Bri

PLAYAWAY

Playaway is a great format that makes audiobooks accessible for everyone. The kids love them and they are very easy to operate. Playaways run on one AAA battery. We usually have a spare battery in the case, however a new one might be needed. So, check before leaving the library to see that everything is working correctly and if anything is wrong with the playaway please let us know right away.

We have quite a few books available on playaways now and they can be found on the shelf next to the Bibliography section.  These are wonderful to listen to in the car, or anytime you are out for a walk.
